I notice that a new pair of drop curbs has been put in on King’s Avenue (at the junction of Lynn Road). I’m sure this is good for people crossing that road.
However, at the same time, the drop curb that faced into Lynn Road has been removed. I can see why, as it, in effect, “moved” round the corner. But it was a bit of a waste of money – that could have been left as it was.
And removing the drop curb has had another effect – I used to cycle along Lynn road then use the drop curb to get onto the (shared) cycle path that starts there. That’s no longer possible.
In fact I’m not sure how any cyclist is supposed to get onto the cycle path now!

As well as attending fires, road traffic collisions and other emergencies, we in the Fire Service can effect a difference in the community by encouraging Fire Safety.

Saving lives on a daily basis is what smoke alarms can do. Carrying out a routine fire safety check in yours or a neighbours home can take only a few minutes but may save lives and a lot of heartache.

* Ensure a property has at least one working smoke alarm on each floor.
* Take a moment to think of the different ways out of your house from varying rooms, upon discovering a fire.
* Consider your action plan, should you face the worst case scenario and your exit is blocked. (Close a door to the fire, ensure you have means of telephoning 999, put soft materials around the door to prevent smoke permeating through gaps, open a window and shout to raise the alarm).
* In a smoke filled room, the freshest air will be at floor level
* Wherever possible, GET OUT, STAY OUT AND CALL THE FIRE SERVICE OUT.

For further information go to www.cambsfire.gov.uk

Take care,

Ely Fire Crew.

If you would like the opportunity to get involved in local decision making by acting as a sounding board for future policy or service proposals, then why not join the Council’s Register of Consultees and give us your views about the decisions we make and the services we provide. The Council posts information on ShapeYourPlace about current consultations but to be sure that you don’t miss your opportunity to have your say then you can sign up to the register of consultees and receive the information directly.

What will this involve?

If you would like to act as a consultee, whether as an individual or a group, then your name will be added to the Council’s Register of Consultees and you will be allocated a consultee reference number. As changes are proposed to develop the Council’s policies or services, the ‘nominated officer’ will select a number of individuals or groups from the list of consultees who could be affected by, or may have an interest in, the policy/service proposals. Through the online application process you can select your areas of interest to be consulted on. The ‘nominated officer’ will be the Council Officer who will be leading the change proposals. If you are selected, then you will be sent a copy of the proposal (in your preferred format – paper or electronic) together with a covering letter and feedback form. You will then have a set period of time to consider the proposal and to offer your feedback using the form provided.

All completed forms will then be returned to the Council for consideration as part of the consultation process.

The Council may publish a summary of responses to a particular consultation exercise on the Council’s website for public inspection. If this is done, no individual responses will be identifiable.

If you would like the opportunity to join the Council’s consultee register, then please complete the online application form.

Earlier this evening I was told about the “world pea shooting championships” being held right here in East Cambs. I knew nothing of this, let alone it is the 43rd year – it is being held in witcham on Saturday 13th July.

Having 3 young children I am a sucker for a fun (cheap) day of entertainment and it doesn’t get better value than £2 an adult and £1 a child to enter a world championship.

I haven’t told the children that they are entering yet – but let the training commence – I have read the rules, now just need to buy some peashooters. I have compared eBay to amazon, and found out that “peashooter” was a plane of which you can buy many model kits. People who have previously bought peashooters also, apparently, bought spud guns – buying stuff with a parcel to wait for – this gets better.

Once we have all the gear (and no idea) I will let you all know how the training is coming along.

Who needs the Olympics or commonwealth games? The cromptons will be peashooting.
